Children's Karate

These classes are part of our year round children's program which offers martial arts training in Cuong Nhu Oriental Martial Arts. Cuong Nhu is a hybrid style which blends 7 different martial arts. Students begin with Shotokan style karate techniques, Boxing, Judo, Aikido, Wing Chun, Tai Chi Chuan, and Vovinam. The children's curriculum is the same as adults but each rank change for children is a much smaller amount of material.

What is a "Flying Dragon" (Ages 6-12)?

Mandarin Martial Arts' Flying Dragon Program is an exciting way of teaching young children the basics of martial arts in a fun and safe environment. This program will develop a child's social skills, discipline and good behavior, builds balance and coordination, provides a year round extra-curricular activity that prepares a child for school, builds self-confidence, and provides daily rewards and promotions that teach goal setting.

What do they learn?

Your child will learn basic skills: Focus, Teamwork, Control, Balance, Memory, Discipline, Fitness, and Coordination. In addition, they learn: How to take appropriate directions from another adult, How to work in a small group, How to work by pairs, Concepts such as up/down, over/under, going around, and a "Safe Place". They will also learn specific karate techniques such as basic kicks, punches, and how to roll and fall without hurting themselves. Finally, and most importantly, they learn that exercise and discipline is FUN!

How do children learn these things?

Students progress is measured by successful demonstration of proficiency with the use of colored stripes. When a child demonstrates a required level of skill an additional piece of colored tape is attached to their belts. This shows them that they are improving their skills and gives them an exciting feeling of real accomplishment.

"Cuong Nhu students through dedicated daily practice increase their spirit, stamina and moral character."
